As you may or may not know Olympic trials in Scarborough are less than 3 weeks away!
20 days until my 200 m breaststroke race!
If you haven’t already done so, get tickets at www.swimming.ca for Saturday April 9th
Training in Vancouver with my coach Jozsef Nagy this season has been great. I love going to the pool every day to work with him as well as with the other athletes in the centre. It’s a young training group, but it is one of my favourites. The whole group gets along great and shares a very similar sense of humour which is a big bonus. We have fun while we work and it is a winning combination.
As we get closer to the trials training begins to taper off a bit. Taper time is like Christmas for us athletes: the workload goes down and the intensity stays high which allows us to feel less tired & sore than we do all season. It gives us more time and energy to fine tune speed and specific race skills.
My Vancouver group will head to Ft. Lauderdale, Florida for a week at the end of March for our final preparation. It’s a good way to get away from all distractions and get into the Eastern time zone comfortably. After that we head into Toronto and racing begins on Tuesday April 5th.
The Olympic trials is a very high intensity event. It is an emotional rollercoaster as lifelong dreams come true and as many come crashing down. Each swimmer has one chance to prove themselves and if on the day of their race they fall short of this, they will not be on the Olympic team and must wait another 4 years for another opportunity. THIS is what makes Olympic trials one of the best spectator events in sport. I mean… I might be biased, but if you have a chance to make it out to Scarborough to any final session of the swim meet – I highly recommend you do. It is an event filled with passion that you might never have experienced before.
I will be there, tunnel vision in check and racing my heart out for my spot on the Rio Olympic team. I can’t wait to be in touch with you all on the other side!!!
Thank you again for all your support along my journey. Please feel free to message me at any point at this e-mail address. I will most definitely get back to you when I have some breathing time after the trials.
